My Five Pillars of Good Skincare

Every individual’s skin is unique due to genetics, lifestyle, and medical history. During a consultation, I will be able to gauge the specific nature of your skin, and recommend the products that would work best to rejuvenate your skin. However, there are some universal truths about proper skin care that every patient should be aware of. I call these the Five Pillars of Good Skin care, the foundation for healthy glowing skin.

1. Sunscreen…..and more sunscreen

Since the turn of the millenium, sunscreen has been the fundamental skin care must-have. With so many formulations out there, it is hard to know which is the right one to use. I personally recommend my patients a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 for daily use, and a water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 90 for outdoor activities. Bearing in mind that for optimal results, the amount of sunscreen used must be adequate, and all sunscreen need to be reapplied if exposed to prolonged periods of time. A dime sized amount is usually adequate for the face. Those with a history of skin cancer and photosensitivity should go one step further and take oral sunblock.

Important point to note for ladies – even if your foundation or makeup contains sunscreen, please make sure to use proper sunscreen in addition to it, because in order to reach the SPF stipulated on the makeup powder, you would need to use about 15 times more than the usual amount of makeup.

2. Never sleep with makeup on

Sleep is an important time when the skin repairs itself, and if pores are clogged with makeup, it cannot perform this function. For those who suffer from acne, it is especially important not to further exacerbate the follicular plugging. So a nightly routine of cleansing and moisturizing is the least one can do for one’s skin’s health.

3. Smoking cessation

Smoking reduces blood flow to the dermis, as well as produces free radicals which damage the collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks of your skin. It is a well-known scientific fact that smoking leads to premature wrinkling and coarseness of the skin. Quitting smoking is one of the most important steps to a more beautiful skin.

4. Be gentle

There are so many harsh products on the market, and some people falsely assume that using that kind of “tough love” on their skin will solve the problem. This is simply not the case. Scrubbing and daily exfoliation strip the skin of its vital oils, and can even lead to inflammation, redness and itchiness. That is why gentle cleansers and moisturizers are always recommended.

5. Food feeds your skin

Your skin is your largest organ, and what you eat can manifest in your how you look. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins is not only good for your whole body, it contributes to healthy, supple -looking skin. Foods containing antioxidants are fantastic for protecting your skin against free radicals, especially the damaging effects of sunlight.
